| The
ruins of the Parthenon dominate the skyline of Athens. Beautifully lit,
it is most impressive at night. Originally built as a temple to Athena,
it was used by the Turks as an arsenal when they conquered Greece in the
1450s. The Parthenon was hit with canon fire from Venetian ships at war
with the Turks. During the 19th century, Britain obtained many antiquities
from Greece. Greece is now attempting to have them returned.
