The
central focus of Jerusalem is the zone of the Temple Mount. Atop the mount
is the Moslem Dome of the Rock, the golden-domed mosque. Within the mosque
is the top of Mount Moriah, from which Mohammed is to have ascended to heaven
on his horse with one leap. At the base of the Temple Mount on the west
is the Western Wall, believed by Jews and Christians to be the last remains
of the great Temple, destroyed in 70 A.D. by the Romans.
