Acacia salicinia

Acacia saliciniaWillow Acacia

Tree

This fast-growing evergreen tree has a vertical, upright form despite its name. It will reach 40 feet high and up to 15 feet wide. It has long, slender willow-like leaves that are a deep blue-green.

Temperature

Hardy to 22F. May be damaged during coldest winters. Tolerates high heat.

Water requirements

Tolerates brackish water and drought. Water will stimulate growth. Withstands long periods of drought but looks best with monthly, deep irrigation in the summer. Avoid shallow watering.

Sun

Full sun. Tolerates reflected sun and heat.

Soil

Tolerant.

Maintenance

Little required if used appropriately and given space to grow. Thin to reduce the possibility of being blown over in high winds.

Disadvantages

Wood is sometimes brittle in wind. Blows over easily, especially if overwatered or if drip emitters are not placed at or beyond the drip line, keeping the roots from spreading and stabilizing the tree. Caterpillars may defoliate in spring. Occasional infestation of desert mistletoe.

Bloom

Small creamy puffball blooms appear from October to December.

Fruit or Seeds

Pods appear after bloom.

Uses

Evokes a cool oasis feeling. Use as shade tree for homes, public spaces, roadsides, reforestation and as a tall screen.

Origin

Native to Australia. Member of the Fabaceae (Leguminoceae) family.

Themes

Desert Grassland, Desert, Desert Transitional, Subtropical, Fragrant.
