Tree

This narrow, vertical tree has long threadlike leaves that give it a weeping effect. The tree grows at a moderate rate to 20 feet tall and spreads to 15 feet wide. The roots do not heave sidewalks. It is remarkably tough and tolerant of drought, heat and poor soil conditions.

Hardy to 18F and may be damaged below that.

Water requirements

Drought tolerant but moderate water helps.

Sun

Full sun. Tolerates reflected sun and heat.

Soil

Most soils, but provide good drainage.

Maintenance

Some pruning and training. Prune in January.

Disadvantages

Litter from leaves and seeds. Can blow over in windy areas, even when staked. Occasional mistletoe infestations.

Bloom

Sparse showing of creamy-white puffball blooms may appear from October to November.

Fruit or Seeds

Long pods turn brown.

Uses

Good as a screen in narrow spots, but not where you need to walk underneath. Group in a small grove; silhouette plant. Provides light shade beneath.

Native of Australia. Member of the Fabaceae (Leguminoceae) family.
