Laurel-leaf
CocculusThis dark green shrub to small tree grows slowly to 15 feet in about 15 years. The crown makes a dense canopy of leaves 20 feet or wider.
Hardy to 20F, injured at 15F. May lose leaves at 20F but recovers quickly in spring.
Moderate to ample, especially in summer.
Will take open or filtered shade, but never reflected heat. Part to full sun.
Prepared garden soil on the acidic side. Needs good drainage. Avoid alkaline situations.
Periodic.
Old leaves drop in spring as new leaves appear. Iron chlorosis and leaf tip burn in alkaline soils. Slow to develop good form.
Inconspicuous greenish flowers in spring.
Black berries in summer.
Does well in shade. When trained as a patio tree, it creates a wide umbrella of dense shade.
