Tree

This dark green shrub to small tree grows slowly to 15 feet in about 15 years. The crown makes a dense canopy of leaves 20 feet or wider.

Temperature

Hardy to 20F, injured at 15F. May lose leaves at 20F but recovers quickly in spring.

Water requirements

Moderate to ample, especially in summer.

Sun

Will take open or filtered shade, but never reflected heat. Part to full sun.

Soil

Prepared garden soil on the acidic side. Needs good drainage. Avoid alkaline situations.

Maintenance

Periodic.

Disadvantages

Old leaves drop in spring as new leaves appear. Iron chlorosis and leaf tip burn in alkaline soils. Slow to develop good form.

Bloom

Inconspicuous greenish flowers in spring.

Fruit or Seeds

Black berries in summer.

Uses

Does well in shade. When trained as a patio tree, it creates a wide umbrella of dense shade.

Origin

From southern Japan and the Himalayas. Member of the Menispermaceae family.
