Tree and Shrub

This evergreen plant can be used as a hedge or trained into a tree, which will grow to 16 feet at most. It has a thick leathery leaf that is fairly glossy. Trees develop slowly but hedges grow at a moderate to fast rate to six feet.

Temperature

Hardy to 15F or below. Tolerant of heat.

Water requirements

Occasional deep irrigation. Accepts moderate or ample. Tolerates drought when fully established.

Filtered to open shade to partial to full sun.

Soil

Tolerant but prefers garden soil with good drainage.

Maintenance

Periodic to continual depending on use and preference.

Disadvantages

Black berries stain. Sheer after bloom to prevent berry crop. Bloom not attractive at close range and may cause allergies. Subject to root knot nematodes and privet weevil. Occasionally gets Texas root rot.

Bloom

Sporadic white flowers that fade to brown.

Fruit or Seeds

Black berries follow bloom. They are poisonous.

Uses

Clips well into a formal hedge. Tree form can be used on patios, in rows, as street plantings or in formal settings.

Origin

Native of China and Korea, it's a member of the Oleaceae family.
