Accent

A dense covering of straw-colored spines give this evergreen plant a soft, fuzzy look. It is the most appealing and most wicked of the cholla. It grows at a slow to moderate rate to about six feet high and three feet wide.

Water requirements

None in regions receiving three to four inches of annual rainfall. Water only once after planting.

Grows among rocks or in any soil with good drainage.

Disadvantages

Barbed, spine-covered segments easily detach. Use tongs to handle plants parts.

Bloom

Inconspicuous flowers in clusters at end of joints from February to May. They are greenish yellow or sometimes white with lavender streaks.

Fruit or Seeds

Green fleshy fruits are one inch long and may or may not have spines.

Uses

Centerpiece for a cactus and succulent garden or a barrier planting. Natural areas and revegetation.

Native to Sonoran Desert. Member of the Cactaceae family.
