Very slow-growing, large evergreen tree (to 70 feet) takes about 15 years to produce a canopy and will eventually be wider than it is tall. It has an upright growth habit that will not seek the sun.

Water requirements

Fastest growth with deep soaks of the root zone. Withstands periods of drought when established, but not truly drought tolerant. Water once a week in summer, every two to three weeks in winter, but do not overwater.

Tolerant. Well-drained enriched soil is ideal.

Maintenance

Periodic.

Disadvantages

Tends to have a three to four-week molting period in mid to late winter even though it is an evergreen. Develops iron chlorosis with too much irrigation.

Produces acorns that are somewhat narrower and smaller than other oak species.

Uses

Its dependable upright growth makes it idea as a street tree. Can be used near lawns.

Native to the southeastern United States, this cultivar comes from Texas. Fagaceae family.

Cultivars

'Heritage Oak' is a cultivar of the Southern Live Oak, which was bred to be resistant to pests and diseases that attach western oaks.
