PalmThis evergreen palm grows 30 to 40 feet and is very erect. Feathery fronds are shiny medium green with slender papery filaments up to two feet or longer. The crown spreads 10 or 15 feet.
Tender at 25F but will recover from a 20F freeze but takes all summer to do so.
Moderate to ample.
Part shade to full sun. Accepts reflected sun in middle zone.
Prefers well-prepared garden soil with depth, but tolerates a range of soils, including alkaline situation, if supplied with good drainage.
Seasonal. Some grooming of leaves and fruiting parts.
Leaves develop dry straw-colored filaments from hot winds, cold or age. Fronds may become pale with iron chlorosis. Fruiting streamers look messy. Removal of old frond ends for cleaner look.
Small plumes of blossoms encased in a woody canoe-like sheath.
Miniature coconut-like fruit that is covered with a sweet edible skin.
Specimen, grove or row. Silhouette plant. Small microclimates, south sides or protected intimate gardens for close-up viewing. Large planters. Attractive in courtyards of tall buildings or in the home garden.
