Tecomaria capensis

Tecomaria capensisCape Honeysuckle

Shrub

This sprawling half-shrub half-vine has glossy deep-green foliage. It grows fast, sending out branches up to 12 feet long. Tied to a support it can climb to 25 feet high. Pruned to a shrub it will reach six feet high and five feet wide.

Temperature

New growth is damaged at 28F. Loves heat.

Water requirements

Moderate to slightly less than moderate. Keep on dry side in fall to encourage more bloom and hardiness to winter temperatures.

Sun

Part to full or reflected sun. The less sun, the less bloom, though foliage remains attractive. Prefers south or west walls under an overhang.

Soil

Prefers improved garden soil with good drainage.

Maintenance

Periodic pruning and pinching.

Disadvantages

Can overgrow its allotted space and look poor if cut back. Can be nipped by frost just when it looks best and has begun to bloom. May take time to recover to blooming size.
