1. Frank William Rohleder 1,2,3, son of Frank William Rohleder and Katherine , was born in Oct 1829 in , Bad Faulenbach, Bavaria, Germany 4 and died on 9 Oct 1904 in Richmond, Henrico, Virginia, at age 75.5 The cause of his death was dysentery and senility.

General Notes: "Rohleder" translates to raw leather, so ancestors could have been leather tanners, which translated to the tailoring business in the new world.

German for Frank William is Franz Wilhelm.

There are four different birth dates listed:

The family history says he was born in Oct 1829.

His obituary states he was 71 when he died in 1904, which would put his birth year at around 1833, which coincides best with the 1880 census data.

1870 census has him (33 - born in 1837), 'Elizabeth' (28) (Sunie?) living in Wilson, NC. There are two children: Mary E, 5, and Joseph (2). Also listed are Olivia Gentry (Dena, Sunie's sister?), 19, and Frank Glazelle (?), 14. Frank is a Butcher, born in Bavaria. Everyone else was born in Virginia. Real estate value of $1,100 is listed next to Elizabeth. I'm unsure if this Frank Rohleder is the same as the Virginia Frank Rohleder.

The 1880 census lists his birth year as about 1834. This makes more sense as far as the age difference between him and his wife. However, if this is his birth year, then he was a lad of 14 when he came to America (see below). It's possible he came with older brothers or sisters.

1900 census lists him as a tailor. It also lists him as being 32 years old, which puts his birth year at 1867. This can't be correct since the eldest son was born in 1868 and he served in the Civil War. His name may also be listed as Franz, but it is unclear since numbers are written on top of his name.

His wife's obituary (1919) mentions that Frank served in Pegram's battalion (Major Willaim J.Pegram's Battalion consisted of: Richmond Grenshaw Virginia Battery, Fredericksburg Virginia Artillery, Letcher Virginia Artillery, PeeDee South Carolina Artillery and the Richmond Purcell Virginia Artillery. This was part of the III Corps Artillery Reserve commanded by Col. R. Lindsay Walker that fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. I can't find a record of Frank being in the Battalion although Sunie did apply for a widow's pension.) during the Civil War and that he came to America at the time of the Carl Schurz rebellion in Germany. There is no mention as to which side he favored. The German Revolution (rebellion) was in 1848-1849. Germany was not unified and the revolution was about that. Information about the rebellion can be found on the Web.

Research Notes: An Internet search on "Faulenbach, Germany" revealed a travel site for the "Bad Faulenbach" district of Germany, which surrounds the town of Fόssen. "Bad Faulenbach" translates to "bath putrid brook" and the region is famous for its sulfur baths and other spa-type activities.

Since the birthplace of our ancestors was always listed as Faulenbach, Germany, we always assumed it was a town that no longer existed. However, it is a region of Bavaria in Germany. We don't know the location of the closest town when the Rohleders were born nor do we know where any records of that time may be kept, if there were any.

Frank's Pensioner Statement of 11 July 1900 states that he was 68 years old and received wounds on 16 September 1862 in the Battle at Sharpsburg, Va (Antietam). He was entitled to receive $15 per year as of 5 August 1902. He states that he was a member of Captain James R. Branch's Battery from Petersburg, Virginia. He was wounded in both arms and in the head.

Sunie's pension application states that after he served with Branch, he served with Pegram. The auditor's statement at the end of her application states:

"The records show that one F.W. Rholetter (also borne as Frederick W. Rholetter, but not found as Frank Wm. Rohleder), private, Branch's, subsequently Pegram's, Virginia Battery Artillery, Confederate States Army, was enlisted March 19. 1862. On the roll dated October 31, 1864 (last on file), he was reported present. The name F.W. Rolletter, private, Pegram's Virginia Artillery (probably the same man), appears on a register of refugees and other in the custody of the provost marshal, Washington, D.C., who were 'received from City Apoint Apl. 12, 1865, and transportation ordered to Norfold, Va.' No record has been found of the date or place of capture or surrender."

It is possible that Frank was at the Battle of Gettysburg, fought the first three days of July 1863, if he had recovered from his wounds. Pegram's battalion participated in the battle. James R. Branch was not a commander at Gettysburg.

Obituary (Tuesday, August 12, 1919, The News Leader, Richmond, VA):

Funeral services for Mrs. Susan A.E. Rohleder, who died yesterday in Washington, were conducted at 3 o'clock this afternoon in Grace Episcopal church, Foushee and Main streets. The burial was in Oakwood.
Mrs. Rohleder was born in Richmond May 16, 1842. She was the daughter of Andrew Gentry and Mars. Mary Ann (Allen) Gentry, of King William county, and granddaughter on the paternal side of William Gentry, of Hanover county, and Mrs. Frances (Pemberton) Gentry, of Kink William county, and on the maternal side of James Hampleton Allen and Mrs. Sarah Hawes (Dancey) Allen, of King William county. James Hampleton Allen was the son of Thomas William Allen, of England. Sarah Hawes Dancey was the daughter of Thomas Dancey of Scotland.
Mrs. Rohleder was married in October 1962 to Frank William Rohleder, a soldier of the Confederacy, who served as an artilleryman in Pegram's battalion. Mr. Rohleder was born in Germany and came to this country at the time of the Carl Schurz rebellion. He was the son of Frank William Rohleder and Mrs. Katherine Rohleder, of Faulenbach, Germany.
Mrs. Rohleder was the mother of a large family, and leaves the following sons: Joseph E. Rohleder, of New York; Andrew H. Rohleder, of Charlotte, NC; Richard A Rohleder, of Brook Road, Henrico County, and M. Emerson Rohleder, of New London, Conn., and one daughter, Miss Grace Irene Rohleder, of Richmond, who has been making her home temporarily in Washington; also one adopted daughter, Miss Pemberton Thacker, daughter of Mrs. Mary Rohleder Thacker.

Research Notes: On the 1900 census, it has Sunie as the mother of 10 children and only five of them still living. Besides Mary Elizabeth, who died in 1895 a year after giving birth to her daughter, and Susan D, who died between 1880 and 1900, there are three other children who must have died at birth or shortly thereafter.

Comment: Mary died a year after giving birth to her daughter. Susan must have died sometime between 1880 and 1900. She is listed as being four years old in the 1880 census. (The 1890 census was lost in a fire.) 13
